How To Password Protect Folder Contents In Windows

Being able to password protect folder contents and subdirectories is an important way of stopping other users on your PC or network from opening and reading your documents. This article lists the four main ways to do this in a variety of Windows operating systems.

The first option is for Windows 7 and Vista users only and uses the group/user authentication feature of the operating system to secure folders.

  • Start by opening Windows explorer and browsing to the folder you want protected.
  • Right click on the folder and choose ‘Properties’ from the context menu.
  • Select the ‘Security’ tab and click the Edit button.
  • In the popup security window that opens you start by selecting a user from the top section (‘Group and User Names’). Then under the ‘Permissions for User’ section, check the Deny column for the row labeled ‘modify’. This automatically checks the remaining denial check-boxes. Click Apply.

The second option uses NTFS in Windows XP to secure folders to specific users. If your computer is using the FAT32 file system format then this will not work.

  • Start by opening Windows explorer and browsing to the folder you want protected.
  • Right click on the folder and choose ‘Properties’ from the context menu.
  • In the pop-up window select the ‘Sharing’ tab.
  • At the top there is a checkbox named ‘Make This Folder Private’. Enable this checkbox and click Apply.
  • If you do not use a password to log onto the computer then you will be prompted to enter one.

The next approach can password protect folder contents of zipped directories. This is an even simpler approach than the first and works on all operating systems. If you have a file/directory to protect then putting it in a zip file is one option to consider.

  • Start by opening Windows and browsing to the zipped folder directory.
  • Double click on the folder to open your Zip software (e.g. Winzip).
  • From the menu, choose File/Add A Password and enter a unique password. The zip folder is now protected.

Keeping your computer safe is paramount!

The final approach incorporates encryption with password protection in XP.

  • Start by opening Windows Explorer and browsing to the folder you want safeguarded.
  • Right click on the folder and open its Properties popup window.
  • Hit the advanced button. One of the options presented is to compress or encrypt attributes.
  • Choose the checkbox to ‘Encrypt Contents to Secure Data’.
  • If you do not use a Windows login then you will be prompted to enter one in at this point.

As with any of these approaches, be careful not to enter a wrong password as this can lock the folder. Try incorporating password protection into your computer backup options (for example, zipping up documents to backup, put a password protection on the zip file, then save it safely to disk).

The 405 also syncs wirelessly with your computer whenever your watch is within range while the 305 must be put into a wired dock. The biggest difference is in price as the 305 is $100 cheaper. The Canon High Definition Camcorder Rocks

The best reason for you to want a high definition camcorder is because you already have a HDTV sitting in your house.  You might as well get full value out of the TV.  With so many different options to choose from, shopping for a camcorder can become a daunting task.  There is a right way and a wrong way to shop for a new HD camcorder.  Let’s skip the bad way and jump right into the good way!

Many people believe that the Canon high definition camcorder is the best available camera available.  They may be right.  But before you decide you will need to answer a few basic questions.

The first question you will need to ask yourself when you start investigating a high def camcorder will be….Price!  How much money do you have available to spend on the camera?  Like anything else in life you will get what you pay for.  So you must know your price range.

Now that you have narrowed down the price of your future camcorder it is time to start exploring the many different formats that are available for the cameras.  It is worth noting that the majority of the money that you spend will go towards the memory options of the camcorders.  There are three main memory options that you will have to look at and ultimately choose the one that will be best for you.  You will be looking at hard drives, DVD memory, and DV tape.  Like everything else in life each option has its pros and cons.

You will probably like the hard drive option if you plan on recording up to 10 hours at a time.  If the majority of your recording time will only be taking up 20-30 minute blocks, then a good choice would probably be a DVD.  If you are just plain used to tape then there is an option for you too.  It is called DV tape…or Digital Video Tape.  This is a good option if you like to keep track of every possible thing you will ever record.

So which brand of high definition camcorder is the best?  Well I’m not sure there is an answer to that question.  With prices all over spectrum and a endless list of options and available features, brand becomes a personal decision.  I’m not sure you will ever go wrong choosing Sony.  They are one of the largest and best known electronic manufactures in the world.

Then there is JVC which has come on strong with camcorders.  But when push comes to shove you just can’t put up much of an argument against Canon.  After all Canon camcorders are made by a company that was founded on the principles of camera design and manufacturing.  Canon is also an optics company which is pretty convenient for a top notch camera company.

In the end perhaps your best source of valid information about camcorders will come from other people who have bought and used them.  There are many online sites that offer user reviews that are very handy.  There are of course magazines and even TV shows that are dedicated to reviewing electronic equipment.

Once you have all the information on topic that you need to make an informed decision, go out and get your camcorder. There is nothing more exciting then making your own movies, home movies or professional, and showing them off to the world.  So will your be buying a Canon high definition camcorder?
